Travelling As A Couple On A Motorcycle- The Good, The Bad, And The Downright Weird

Travelling As A couple On A Motorcycle

The Good, The Bad, And The Downright Weird!

Planning a trip with your significant other is a beautiful and romantic experience. Traveling as a couple on a motorcycle, on the other hand, is a whole different story! It can be very rewarding and exciting, but it also comes with its downsides.

Discovering awesome locations together

Pietro and I had been traveling around the world for over 8 years before we decided to take our first motorcycle trip together.

At first, we were quite apprehensive because we knew it wouldn’t be as easy as our previous trips, which only usually involved booking airplane tickets, hotel rooms, and tours.

2 years after our first motorcycle couple trip, here are the experiences we’ve shared- The good, the bad, and the downright weird!

TRAVELING AS A motorcycle COUPLE- THE GOOD

Travelling as a couple helps you work better as a team

1) You Share A Common Passion

When couples decide to travel together, it usually means that traveling is a passion that they have in common. We definitely both enjoy exploring new places together and adding the excitement of riding a motorcycle was something we both decided on without any hesitations on both sides.

With that added interest, our travel experiences have been intensified a thousandfold. We are much more interested in the places and find that we feel much more alive and involved with the people and culture of where we visit.

2) You Can Take A Break From The Routine

Ever felt like, the routine of everyday life is not only a bore but also affecting the intimacy of your relationship?

Well, you’re not alone.

While taking a romantic trip off somewhere like Santorini or the Maldives can possibly rekindle that fire, I feel that such trips can also become a bore for some people.

Adding motorcycle travel to our yearly trips has helped us keep the sparks flying, especially since we are both quite active people who get more excited when we’re out and about.

3) You Learn To Work Better As A Team

Another positive side to going on a journey as a couple on a motorcycle is that you are you learn to work well as a team. You’re basically sharing the same seat, so it means that you either cooperate with each other or your holiday is over.

According to Manu Torres, the only person who’s got your back on the road is your partner. So, with that in mind, you know that if everything is to go well, you will need to learn to trust each other more and understand your roles in this road dance.

Pietro and I have come to an unspoken understanding. He takes care of the route planning and navigation while I’m in charge of the more fun stuff- choosing where to eat, what crazy activity to try out and what to wear of course! (Still got to be fashionable!).

So far, it’s been the best partnership deal.

4) You Learn To Be Vulnerable Together

Traveling as a couple on two wheels means that you spend a whole lot of time together.

All day!

Everyday!

There’s nothing more romantic than being with the love of your life all the time, unlike when you’re back home and have other engagements. What many couples don’t think about before going on a motorcycle journey though, is that you will get tired and irritated and your worst side will come out more than when you’re on a regular trip.

With long stretches of road ahead of you, motorcycle travel helps you come to terms with your weaknesses and not be ashamed of them. After all, it’s just the two of you in the situation.

When I’m in my most irritable mood, I know I can turn to Pietro, have an argument, makeup, and move on, knowing that he understands exactly what’s going on with me.

5) It Looks and Feels Sexy

There’s just something about all that shiny metal and rugged clothing that makes for a sexy look.

I bet you have seen a motorcycle couple whiz by and thought how sexy cool they look together. Well, That could be you too if you’re willing to take the leap and jump on that motorcycle with your partner to ride to unknown and exotic places together.

The sexy feeling comes from the thrill of the excitement coupled with the adrenaline of dangerous sharp curves and sheer cliffs around you as you ride those out-of-the-way roads.

You just have to try it to feel it!

6) You Can Be Silly Together

Imagine riding through a coastal village and seeing the most beautiful blue lake you’ve ever seen. It looks like it’s beckoning to you and you answer the call. Without a swimsuit, you look around to make sure no one is around. Then you strip and jump in.

Another scenario is, coming to a rest by the side of a road after a long 2-hr straight ride, to stretch your tired muscles. For exercise, you crank up the volume of the music from your motorcycle and start dancing in the middle of the road.

I can go on, but I think you get the picture. These are things you can only do when you travel as a couple on a motorcycle. Perhaps you could also do them while driving in a car or van but, it’s just so much more silly to watch a dancing motorcycle couple in the middle of nowhere, I think.

TRAVELING AS A MOTORCYCLE COUPLE- THE BAD

1) It Can Get Boring And Tiring

Ok, as much as I love being on the motorcycle, the ride can sometimes be long and boring, especially when the scenery doesn’t change for a long time.

The boredom is more for the passenger than the driver though, as you have absolutely nothing to do!

To ease this problem, we chat about every and anything via our intercom, listen to the same music and take frequent stop breaks to stretch our muscles.

2) Your Arguments Will Be Intense

I beg to differ with some motorcycle couples who say that the ride makes you argue less because you are always going in the same direction and are therefore on the same page.

From our experience, that’s just a myth. I’ve found that the arguments can get pretty intense when you throw in fatigue and a sometimes annoying passenger (me!) who wants to take photos and videos of everything that looks remotely interesting.

Now, I think that having arguments can be healthy because they show emotions, which is a sign of emotional well-being in any relationship. Just because you’re on the road in a stunning location doesn’t mean your partner won’t get on your nerves anyway.

So get ready for those intense word exchanges. We know where those passionate arguments can lead sometimes, don’t we?

3) You Are Both At Risk

Traveling by motorcycle with your partner involves a lot of adventure-seeking and dare-devil moments. While the excitement is two-fold (you feed off of each others’ excitement and that makes everything x2), the risks are just as much by two.

You will have to be responsible for each other on the road by watching out for any possible dangers around you. You must be alert at all times, keeping in mind that any mistake made by one of you will definitely affect both of you, at the same time.

An example is when the passenger feels sleepy while riding a long boring route. This is an extremely risky thing to do as every lean you make will affect the driver’s ability to steer smoothly. So, to avoid any fatal mistakes, you both have to be in constant communication.

When you or the driver feel tired, you have to communicate, stop and take a rest.

4) There Will Be Less Sex

So, I know I mentioned feeling sexy as a good part of traveling as a couple via motorcycle. While that is 100% true, it doesn’t always translate into having more sex while on the road.

There is a lot of closeness and intimacy when you travel together but depending on the kind of traveler that you are, you might end up doing so much during the day, that you fall into bed feeling completely knackered!

But, less sex isn’t all bad because when you do have sex, the rarity and intensity of it are what will make it special and memorable.

1) Mind Reading

There’s just something special about motorcycle travel with your significant other. Once you survive the first couple of trips together, you find that you can literally read each others’ minds most of the time.

You’ll find that you’re craving similar foods, and even have similar ideas for capturing photos. Another weird thing that happens with Pietro and me is how we can just tell when we’ve had enough of a place. Without saying a word, we would just make our way out of there and back to the motorcycle, as peacefully as can be.

Strange!

2) F.O.M.O

Just for informative purposes, FOMO is an acronym that stands for Fear Of Missing Out.

Just like us, there are thousands of couples taking road trips to jaw-dropping, breathtaking places around the world. Just take a look at your social media and you’ll find those envious photos and videos every which way you turn.

This is where FOMO rears its head. Once you get back home from your exciting motorcycle trip, you find yourself planning the next one. There is usually an urgency to it too because motorcycle traveling can be addictive. And when you find that special someone willing to share a motorcycle and the road with you, the addiction is set.

To us, having this particular genre of FOMO isn’t strange, but to our family, we appear crazy.

They say things like, “Didn’t you just come back from 2 weeks in Croatia? It’s too much!”

3) The Motorcycle Wave

The motorcycle wave is a special way of greeting motorcyclists on the road. You put up two fingers (similar to the peace sign) to acknowledge each other and especially after overtaking another rider.

It can be done by both the driver and the passenger, but there are rules involved too! The most important being that it’s done below the handlebars while riding, and it must not appear overenthusiastic.

When we first began riding, it seemed really awkward. However, the more we got the wave, the easier it became for us to do it. And it’s just so satisfying when you see another motorcycle couple drive by and all 4 of you do the “wave”.

Watch it though, you might catch yourself doing it when you’re driving to work in your car and see some sexy-looking motorcycle couple on their way to that exotic place you’re sure they’re off to.

A motorcyclist on his motorcycle with 2 fingers up in a wave. There is the backdrop of the medieval walled city of Avila, Spain behind him.

In a nutshell, making that decision to go on a long journey together as a couple using a motorcycle has its ups and downs as with any other way of traveling. With a motorcycle, things can get pretty interesting and more intense.

The best part for us though is that we get to create precious moments together that other modes of traveling simply cannot afford. And for this, we are grateful and proud to call ourselves a motorcycle travel couple.

Have you ever been on a long motorcycle trip (or otherwise) with your partner? We would love to hear about your experiences. Let us know in the comments below. What would you add to this list?
